Steyn drops Bulls to narrow win

A drop-goal from Morne Steyn seven minutes from time earned the Bulls a hard-fought win over the Waratahs.
The reigning Super 14 champions shrugged off their disappointing 2008 form to overcome the play-off chasing Waratahs at a rain-soaked Loftus Versfeld.

The Bulls had to fight back from a half-time deficit. The Waratahs had scored the first try through centre Rob Horne in the ninth minute after a powerful break from number 8 Wycliff Palu. Kurtley Beale added the conversion, and the lead should have been extended shortly after.

Lote Tuquiri had done the hard work in ripping through the defence and finding Luke Burgess with the off load. But the scrum-half lost the ball over the line, and with a Derick Hougaard drop-goal and Steyn penalty the Bulls pulled the score back to 6-7 at half-time.

The difficult conditions had been highlighted in the first half by missed shots at goal from Steyn, Hougaard and Tuquiri. But Steyn was on target with his first attempt of the second half, converting Derick Kuun's 43rd-minute try.

Tuquiri then missed another penalty shot before Beale slotted three points in the 54th minute. Beale also landed a drop-goal with 15 minutes to go but the Bulls had more late pressure and Steyn landed the winning points.

Bulls (6) 16: Try by Derick Kuün (44 min). Derick Hougaard kicked a dropped goal and Morne Steyn a conversion, a penalty and a dropped goal.
