The Stormers kept their dream of a Super 14 semi-final berth alive with a hard-fought 20-10 victory over the Brumbies at Newlands on Saturday.
It was a well-deserved win after having to dig deep into their reserves in the second half to see of a concerted fight back effort from the Brumbies.

After looking comfortable at half-time the Stormers had to survive a second-half comeback by the Brumbies in Cape Town to record their first win over the Australian franchise in 10 years.

Three first-half tries had put Newlands in party mode with plenty of Mexican waves sweeping around the stadium. It took 12 minutes for the home side to open the scoring through Jean de Villiers.

The wing was put over by Gcobani Bobo after Peter Grant had begun the move with a good pass.

Fly half Grant added a conversion and a penalty before the Stormers were awarded a penalty try by referee Steve Walsh when Bobo was obstructed off the ball. The Brumbies were then down to 14 men thanks to a yellow card and Grant's second penalty turned the screw.

The 20-0 lead lasted until the break and it looked as if the bonus point would be a formality.

The Brumbies had other ideas and got on the scoreboard in the 55th minute thanks to a Adam Ashley-Cooper try. It was reward for Australian ambition that saw repeated penalties kicked to touch and a good run by Tyrone Smith that put Ashley-Cooper over.

The conversion was missed but the Stormers were now in defensive mode. Fortunately for them the Brumbies could not add to their total until the final minute when replacement Peter Kimlin went over for a consolation try.

Stormers (20) 20: Tries by Jean de Villiers (11 min), Penalty Try (22 min). Peter Grant kicked two conversions and two penalties.
