Matt Damon is reportedly to play the role of Francois Pienaar, captain of South Africa's 1995 World Cup-winning rugby team, in a film to be directed by Clint Eastwood about Nelson Mandela and the effect the win had on the Rainbow Nation.
Damon - star of the Bourne trilogy and the Talented Mr Ripley - was brought on board by fellow actor Morgan Freeman who will play Mandela in the film adaptation of a book by British journalist and author Jon Carlin, entitled "Play the Enemy: Nelson Mandela And The Game That Made A Nation."

Freeman, who had the idea for the film, entitled "The Human Factor", has previously described the Mandela role as the role of his life.

Pienaar, who later moved on to play and coach Saracens in London, has told South African newspapers that his wife was "pleased" at the choice of Damon to play him.

The Sprinbgoks won the 1995 final with Joel Stransky's extra-time dropped goal but it was the presentation of the Webb Ellis Cup by Mandela, who was wearing Pienaar's No 6 jersey, which has lived on in the memory. Filming is expected to start next year.
