IRFU may appoint summer stand-in

The Irish Rugby Football Union may opt to appoint a caretaker coach for this summer's internationals if their three-man appointments committee fail to secure their preferred target by the middle of May.
The Irish Independent reports that outgoing assistant Niall O'Donovan and Connacht coach Michael Bradley have been lined up as potential stand-ins for the summer dates with the Barbarians, Australia and New Zealand.

The newspaper reports that Munster's Heineken Cup and Magners League title chases will be conveniently cited as justification for not inviting Declan Kidney to take on the role.

Kidney is believed to have encountered a negative canvas amongst many of the wider IRFU committee informally contacted last week as to their thoughts on the identity of Eddie O'Sullivan's successor.

The three-man appointments committee, comprising Neilly Jackson, Pat Whelan and Noel Murphy, will identify their target, possibly in conjunction with Grafton Recruitment and marketing agency The Essentially Group, the partnership who aided Ulster's recent recruitment process but the wider IRFU body will confirm the appointment.

Already, several of the potential targets have ruled themselves out of the running, including John Mitchell, Pat Howard, Jake White and Brian Smith.
