Speaking in the aftermath of the Wales wing's outstanding try in the 37-21 defeat at the hands of South Africa last weekend, Edwards backed him to dazzle the Boks in Lions colours next summer.
"Shane is certainly the name on everyone’s lips when it comes to the Lions’ squad and I believe he will be one of the main stays of the tour next year if he stays fit," commented Edwards, who is working as a Lions ambassador for sponsors HSBC>
"His try on Saturday against the World Champions was lethal. Players like Shane make you sit up and watch and that is one of the greatest things about rugby.
"People talk about rugby nowadays being all about big strong guys but Shane strikes a blow for those of us under six foot! He is a magnificent player and would have definitely given Ian McGeechan some pleasure to watch.”
Edwards, who toured South Africa with the British & Irish Lions twice himself, was also impressed by Gareth Cooper, James Hook, Gethin Jenkins and Alun-Wyn Jones, all of whom Edwards believes have ‘put their hands up for Lions selection’.
He added, "It is great news that so many of the Wales players are putting their hats into the ring for the Lions but they also know that the autumn internationals, and particularly next year’s Six Nations, are when selection decisions will really be made.
"I am confident there will be several twists and turns to go before the final squad is announced.”
Commenting on England’s big clash with New Zealand last Saturday, Edwards was also impressed with the speed of England youngster Topsy Ojo - another who may be dreaming of a place on the Lions tour next year.
"Topsy is similar to Shane Williams. He made the most of the slim opportunity presented to him and to score against the All Blacks is no mean feat. He would have certainly made himself stand out to the selectors with his performance in the first test.”
In related news, fellow Lions legend and ambassador Gavin Hastings believes that Scotland’s historic victory over Argentina last weekend could bring even more rewards for the Scottish players.
"Scotland’s win over Argentina was very significant for Scottish rugby. Mike Blair was outstanding and seems to relish the role of captain. By being the first Scotland captain to record a victory in Argentina he has certainly achieved something great on his rugby CV and put his hand up for the Lions Tour."
Hastings, who is the all-time record points scorer for the Lions, added, “John Barclay was also outstanding and could yet force his way into a Lions squad if he has a good Six Nations next year.
"And Chris Paterson is a wonderful goal kicker and McGeechan may well be looking to take him to South Africa based on his kicking skill.”
