The ITM Cup is the latest incarnation of New Zealand's National Provincial Competition (NPC). Formerly known as the Air New Zealand Cup, the competition boasts 14 club sides that compete in a 10-week round robin format followed by the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.
Not all teams will play each other during the first stage of the competition where a formula has been developed to determine which teams do not play each other, based on a team's competition placing from the previous season. The top eight teams at the end of the round robin will advance to the quarter-finals, semi-finals and then the final with the team finishing highest during the round robin stage claiming home advantage.
The Ranfurly Shield maintains its special place within the ITM Cup, with the holder putting the Shield up at all home games in the round robin stage.
