About

The Currie Cup

The Currie Cup, also known as the ABSA Currie Cup for sponsorship reasons, is South Africa's premier club rugby competition.

First contested in 1889, the format sees eight teams battle for the Currie Cup crown in the Premier Division while six other teams play in the First Division for the chance to be promoted to the top flight. The teams play each other home and away and then the top four sides in each division advance to the knock-out stages to contest the semi-final and then the final.

The winner of the Premier Division final wins the Currie Cup. The winner of the First Division final plays the team that finishes last in the Premier Division in a two-leg playoff to determine which team plays in the Premier Division the following season.
